Miles McPherson, How he Brought the Rock Church to its new Location

Recently, the Rock Church moved to a new location in Point Loma. Here, Pastor McPherson, a former defensive back for the San Diego Chargers, discusses the new church facility, goals of the Rock and the methods used to achieve these goals.

How do you use technology to enhance the breadth and scope of the Rock?
On any given Sunday at the Rock Church you’ll see a diverse cross section of cultures, mostly teens through young adults in their 30s. These people grew up in an age of technology and they’re very responsive to it. Recognizing that, we’re increasing our use of technology to impact the congregation and the San Diego community. One of the coolest things in the main sanctuary is over 3,000 square feet of projector screens, which constantly stimulate the senses with images that help illustrate the messages. Users can electronically connect to the Rock through podcasting and videocasting.
Why did you decide to build the new church facility in Point Loma, and how were you able to fund the project?
Actually, God brought me to this location. When the Naval Training Center was still the property
of the Navy, God told me I would have a church there one day. Then the base closed through BRAC, and a pastor friend called me and told me that Building 94 was available. We needed a place for our young school and church. Our vision is to make a long-lasting positive impact on San Diego. In regard to funding, in 2003 we launched a capital campaign called the Nehemiah Project 3 as a way to raise funds for the building campaign. Our church body answered the challenge, and we moved into the new building on August 26. That was an incredible day for me, my family and many members of the church who have been there since the church started at SDSU.
How is the Rock run like a business to be able to extend resources to build the new church and support the community?
From our IT department to our volunteer hospitality staff, the Rock Church and Academy would not exist without the willingness of individuals to “do something”. While we have positions parallel to those in the business world, the common goal is not financial gain, but spiritual empowerment.
