Keeping Kids In Touch

Grab your old computers by the power cord and save them from being recycled. There is a new possibility for life emerging for aged PCs and laptops, and the cause is giving these machines a higher calling.

By providing a military child a computer, no matter what the model, year or software programs it runs, the lonely youngster is given a new way to communicate with a parent or sibling serving overseas, stationed in a separate location or operating a military vessel or aircraft. This creates a rare tool for these children, who otherwise may have no way to reach their loved ones. Kids in Touch founder Jenny Dudas knows the joy a computer can bring to an underprivileged child and is dedicated to seeing more delivered. “I recently just missed a donation of 500 computers that ended up going to a recycler,” says Dudas. “We could have really put those to good use. I have a large waiting list for computers that I am trying to fulfill, so I’m hoping corporations that read this will consider donating their used computers to Kids in Touch, instead of going the recycler route.”

Besides a $5,000 grant from the Entegris Charitable Giving Program, a high-tech company based in Minneapolis, Minn., Kids in Touch has received limited funding. This has forced Dudas to pay for many of the organization expenses out of her own pocket. Because of this, she is in need of a few helping hands:
“I am looking for a couple of angels to make financial donations to help me keep the program going. Kids need to keep in touch with their family members when they are deployed, especially those who are in harm’s way.”
Furthermore, Dudas is hoping that someone with storage space will provide room for her to house the computers currently filling her garage and rented locations.
Kids in Touch is a praiseworthy organization with a heart the size of the military heroes they are trying to help. Next time your company is doing its regular PC upgrade, donate a few outdated systems to Kids in Touch—the children and their parents will thank you.
