Invitrogen Joins EPA's Climate Leaders Program
Thursday, October 09, 2008
CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As a part of its continued commitment to environmental sustainability, Invitrogen Corporation (NASDAQ:IVGN), a provider of essential life science technologies for research, production and diagnostics, today announced its participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders program. By participating in Climate Leaders, Invitrogen has pledged to reduce its corporate-wide greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Partner companies commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of their greenhouse gas emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals, and annually reporting their progress to EPA. Through program participation, companies create a credible record of their accomplishments and receive EPA recognition as corporate environmental leaders.
“EPA applauds our corporate partners who are reducing their climate footprints in cost-effective ways,” said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. “Not only is Invitrogen contributing to this country’s energy independence, the company is proving that businesses can save green by going green.”
Invitrogen is already demonstrating corporate climate change leadership by embracing reduction of its CO2 emissions by focusing on energy conservation and efficiency, alternative sources of energy, LEED certification of its buildings, and technological innovation.
“Addressing climate change is a key part of Invitrogen’s corporate responsibility,” said Cristina Amorim, Invitrogen’s Sr. Director of Global Environmental Health and Safety. “With the implementation of a number of energy conservation projects, Invitrogen has already decreased our carbon dioxide emissions by 35 percent since 2004.”
Invitrogen is active in other worldwide environmental sustainability programs in addition to the EPA’s Climate Leaders program. These include:
- In Carlsbad, Calif., more than 26 tons of electrical equipment waste has been recycled, preventing it from filling landfills in 2007.
- In Norway, cogeneration transforms waste into energy—every year, 840 tons of flammable hazardous waste is burned, generating heat energy for offices.
- In Frederick, Md., Invitrogen reduced one of its hazardous waste streams in the manufacturing area by 96% in 2007.
- In Inchinnan, United Kingdom, the site implemented smart processes, saving 14,000 cubic meters of water per year, recycling 40 tons of cardboard and paper per year and preventing 170 tons/year of bottled liquid waste from being disposed in landfills.
