End to End Virtualization Saves Money

In a Q&A with bizSanDiego, CDS acting president, Mark Gilbert, discusses ways for companies to cut cost, go green and the future of server and storage virtualization.

bizSD: What’s new at Commercial Data Systems?
We are very excited about the recent addition to Server and Storage Virtualization practice that includes an end-to-end approach to virtualization that eliminates the risks and costs associated with traditional ‘point in time’ and ‘silo’ methodologies. Our Virtualization technology solution centralizes all desktops, servers and applications on one unified storage architecture. The result is an easy-to-use, easy-to-manage IT infrastructure that reduces costs, improves performance, and increases system uptime.
bizSD: How can CDS help companies cut costs?
With rising electrical costs and exploding data demands, customer IT centers are becoming increasingly more expensive to maintain and manage. The cost to power and cool servers and computers over their lifetimes, today exceeds the cost of the equipment originally.
How is CDS going green?
The old IT methodology of deploying single servers and storage appliances for each application a data center runs, is no longer an efficient model. With the average utilization rate of computers processing power at only 8%, an immense amount of waste in power and cooling is inevitable. CDS is advocating a new approach called "End to End Virtualization". By putting multiple "virtual" applications on single machines, utilization rates of the CPU cycles can increase in excess of 50%. This leads to fewer machines, less power and cooling requirements, and more manageability. CDS itself saw it's own electrical bill drop 30% after instituting it's virtualizaiton practice in it's own data center.bizSD: What is in store for the future of the Server & Storage Virtualization?
To further leverage the benefits of virtualizing, CDS also offers a desktop virtualization solution by incorporating VMware’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) software. The right combination of hardware, software, and management capabilities can replace the traditional desktop computer model. CDS’ desktop virtualization, with VMware’s VDI, incorporates two third-party products for a complete and powerful solution.Visit www.cdsinc.com
