Stephen Chipman will be the next CEO of Grant Thornton LLP, succeeding Edward Nusbaum on Jan. 1, 2010. Grant Thornton LLP is the U.S. member firm of Grant Thornton International Ltd, one of the Global 6 accounting organizations.

“We look forward to the leadership that Stephen will provide,” said Don Williams, partner-in-charge of Grant Thornton’s San Diego office. “I am sure that he will dedicate himself in continuing Grant Thornton’s tradition of providing strong leadership to the accounting profession and in speaking out on issues of importance; providing the Grant Thornton Experience for our San Diego partners, people and clients; and leading our San Diego efforts to expand our global service capabilities and our corporate social responsibility agenda.”
Chipman was most recently chief executive officer, Greater China Management Corporation, responsible for leading the development and growth of services for Grant Thornton in China. Under Stephen’s leadership during the last two years, Grant Thornton’s resources in China have expanded significantly to over 1,600 people in six offices.
A member of Grant Thornton for 28 years, Stephen has held a number of key executive leadership positions. He served as the U.S. Central Region managing partner from 2003 to 2006, delivering the most improved growth and profitability of any region in the firm during that period. Stephen served as the managing partner of the Dallas office from 2000 to 2003 and as the U.S. managing partner of Global Services and worldwide director of International Business Centers from 1998 to 2000. During that time, he developed the strategy and business plan for the launch of Grant Thornton International’s International Business Center network and served on the Grant Thornton International Board of Governors, the U.S. National Leadership Team and Partnership Board.
During the past six years as a member of the Grant Thornton LLP Senior Leadership Team, Stephen served as the inaugural chair of the Grant Thornton Experience Leadership Council, and as chair of both the Global and China initiatives. Stephen began his work on international affairs in Hong Kong in 1992 as the regional technical director for Asia Pacific, and started his career with Grant Thornton in 1986 in Plymouth, England.
A trusted expert on international business and foreign affairs, Stephen maintains an active schedule of speaking engagements. His commentary has been featured in The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and Forbes Magazine. His contributions to the profession and to his community have been recognized by the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, the International Trade Association of Greater Chicago, the Texas Association of Business, and the Texas-based, non-profit Special Care & Career Services.
Stephen was educated at Plymouth College and Plymouth Polytechnic in Devon, England and is qualified as a British Chartered Accountant and an American Certified Public Accountant. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Edward Nusbaum was named Grant Thornton LLP CEO in 2001, and under his leadership the firm tripled in size, from $400 million to $1.2 billion in annual revenues, more than doubling the growth of any other Global 6 accounting organization U.S. member firm during this time. Effective Jan. 1, 2010, Edward Nusbaum will assume responsibilities as CEO of Grant Thornton International.
